Colorado Springs Children's Photographer- Doljabi
Benjamin's first birthday celebration (Doljabi)
I recently learned all about a very fun Korean 1st birthday tradition. A Korean 1st birthday is referred to as "Dohl", and a "Dohl Jabee or Doljabi" is a traditional ceremony where a baby is provided a selection of items to choose from. Whichever object they choose predicts their future profession/destiny. Typically there is a big party to celebrate the Doljabi ceremony, but since Benjamin's father is currently deployed and the family just recently relocated to Colorado Springs from New York, Benjamin's mama reached out to me to celebrate this special time in his life through photography instead of the traditional party they had for his older brother. I'm so glad she did- This was such a fun photo session! It was a little chaotic as these 2 had much more important things to do than sit still for a few photos haha. Benjamin's grandmother came all the way from Korea to celebrate Benjamin's birthday and brought these gorgeous traditional Korean outfits "Hanbok" for both boys to wear for the Doljabi ceremony. The colorful bag with money in it and the small colorful balls attached to his sash all represent good luck and riches. The objects used include a stethoscope- representing a career as a doctor, rice- representing abundant life, a whisk- representing a career as a chef, money- representing riches, a pencil- representing a scholar/professor, and a microphone- representing a musician. As you can see from the photos, Benjamin chose a fantastic destiny as a wealthy scholar! Such a fun tradition! Happy first birthday sweet boy!
